Walking away

"Color Feast"
Since my last post in May I have tried unsuccessfully to complete 6 paintings. All of them I felt were not good enough to post on my blog or on my website. Countless times I wiped off each of the panels before finally giving up. Why do I feel so restless and anxious while painting and how can I stop it? I needed to calm my mind. In order to do this I needed to slow down the painting process.
This familiar color scheme and composition finally felt really GOOD so I began a new painting. Several times I had the urge to wipe off the panel and start over but I resisted! Instead, I walked away, coming back either a few hours later or the next day which allowed me to look at the painting with fresh eyes and a calmer mind. With a calmer mind I found each brushstroke that I liked, and then, carefully, I added a few more. If the restless feeling came back, I again walked away. It worked! Finally a completed painting!
I was focusing on the need to complete a painting, which caused my anxiety, instead of enjoying the process and creating a beautiful work of art that I love.
